Question : RISE IN RURAL BPL POPULATION



(a) the estimated rise in the rural population/ below poverty line people at the end of 2002 as compared to the population in 2001;

(b) the details of States that have shown progressive rise in the number of people living below poverty line stating their per capita income as compared to the national level; and

(c) the manner in which the Union Government propose to raise the living standard of the rural people living below poverty line during the Tenth Plan period?

(a) The Ministry of Rural Development has not estimated the rural population/below poverty line people at the end of 2002.

(b) Question does not arise.

(c) The Government has attempted to address the multi-dimensional nature of poverty with a three-pronged strategy consisting of economic growth, human development and direct intervention through poverty alleviation programmes. Greater role for empowered Panchayti Raj Institutions and involvement of communities in the implementation of anti poverty programmes are also envisaged.
