Question : Power from Tidal Waves

(a) whether the Government has any proposal to generate power using tidal waves and if so, the details thereof;
(b) whether the Government has made any study/efforts till date in this regard and if so, the details thereof; and
(c) the steps taken by the Government to increase the power generation capacity from tidal waves?

(a): No Madam, Government has no proposal at present to generate power using tidal waves.
(b): Yes Madam, at Vizhinjam first Oscillating Water Column (OWC) was built in 1991 to study the feasibility of harnessing wave energy. But due to lower generation the plant was completely decommissioned and found techno-commercially not viable.
(c): Gujarat Power corporation Limited (GPCL) had signed MoU with M/s. Atlantis Resources limited (Joint venture of GPCL, Atlantis & PMES) for carrying out further studies and implementing a 50 MW Pilot Tidal based power project at Gulf of Kutchha at Mandvi in 2010-11.
