Question : Establishment of Steel Plants

(a) the existing steel production capacity of various public and private sector steel plants in the country, Plant-wise;
(b) whether the high level committee headed by Hon''ble Prime Minister had initiated plan of action for increasing steel production upto 300 MT by the year 2025, if so, the details thereof and the follow up action taken thereon;
(c) whether the Government proposes to establish new public sector steel plants in various parts of the country; and
(d) if so, the details thereof including the production capacity of these proposed/under construction plants, location and plant-wise?

(b) Based on the decision taken in the meeting of High Level Committee on Manufacturing (HLCM) held on 9th July, 2013 to achieve 300 metric tonnes per annum steel production capacity by 2025-26, a concept of Special Purpose Vehicle was enunciated. Four mineral rich states namely Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Karnataka and Jharkhand have been identified for setting up of Integrated Steel Plants with the collaboration of Central and State PSUs through SPV route. MoUs for setting up of Steel SPVs in the States of Chhattisgarh was signed on 09.05.2015 and in Jharkhand on 28.06.2015.

(c)&(d): NMDC Ltd. is in the process of setting up a 3.0 metric tonnes per annum Integrated Steel Plant at Nagarnar, District Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh. The plant is being set up with an investment of Rs. 15,525 crores and is currently in construction stage.
