Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT (SMT. SMRITI ZUBIN IRANI)

(a) : There has been no independent study to establish that the academic performance of students getting admitted in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is low.

The IITs select the best and brightest students, through a rigorous entrance examination system. The admission to the undergraduate programmes is based on a two tier test, which consist of JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Only the top 1.5 lakh candidates (including all categories) from nearly 13 lacs students who appear in JEE(Main) qualify to appear in the JEE (Advanced) examination. Admissions to IITs are based on All India Rank in JEE (Advanced), subject to the condition that such candidates are in the top 20 percentile of successful candidates in class XII examinations conducted by their respective Boards in applicable categories. Admissions to post-graduate programs in IITs are based on inter-alia the performance of the candidates in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) Examination and interview.

The students of IIT have established a name for themselves and are sought by the Industry in India and abroad.

(b) : No, Madam.

(c) : Does not arise.
