Question : REVAMPING OF MID DAY MEAL PROGRAMME



(a) whether the Government proposes to revamp/review the Mid Day Meal Programme;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the funds earmarked therefor;

(c) the details of the irregularities/misuse of fund noticed under the said programme during each of the last three years and the current year, State-wise; and

(d) the action taken by the Government in this regard?

(a) & (b): A National Level Committee comprising Nutritional experts and representatives from 5 States has been constituted in April 2008:-

(i) To re-examine the food grains requirement (per child per day) under MDM Programme.

(ii) To examine the adequacy of the present norm of Central Assistance of cooking cost (per child per day) for 2009-2010.

(iii) To design and institute a suitable mechanism to factor in inflation index in the cooking cost norms.

(iv) To examine any other related matter for appropriate recommendation.

For the MDM Programme, an amount of Rs. 8000 Crore has been provided in the budget for 2008-09.

(c) & (d): As and when, any complaint is brought to the notice of the Government,the concerned State Government/UT Administration is asked to conduct suitable enquiry, take suitable action against the responsible person and initiate corrective measures to avoid recurrence of such incidents.Some cases of irregularities have come to notice of the Government.Details and action taken are annexed.
