Question : Joint Entrance Examination

(a) the total number of students who have registered for joint entrance examination
(JEE) during the last three years and the current year;
(b) whether the number of applications for registration to the JEE this year have
declined from the previous year and if so, the details thereof along with the
reasons therefor;
(c) the number of vacant seats in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) on the basis
of the JEE held during the last three years;
(d) whether the Government has constituted any committee to evolve a common
seat allocation system for seat allocation by IITs, National Institutes of
Information Technology (NIITs) and other Centrally Funded Technical
institutions and if so, the details thereof; and
(e) the other steps taken by the Government to make the engineering course more
attractive by creating more job opportunities?

(a): The number of candidates registered for JEE during the last three years
and the current year are tabulated below:

(b): There is a slight decline of the number of applicant during the year 2018 as
compared to the last year. The total number of registered candidates during
2017 was 1330540 whereas during the year 2018 it is 1281086.
(c): Tabular sheet containing details is attached at Annexure-I.
(d): A Technical Committee was constituted, which submitted its report in
November, 2014. The Technical Committee recommended joint seat
allocation process to take place from the academic year 2015-16. It was also
recommended that a Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) be formed with
members from IITs & NITs which will work out necessary activities for
implementation of joint seat allocation process.
As per recommendations of the Technical Committee, the joint seat allocation
process has been put in place from the academic year 2015-16 and the
process is carried out by the JoSAA since 2015.
(e): NITs and IIEST place lot of emphasis on placement of Engineering
Graduates. The efforts have in general yielded better job opportunities of the
students.
