Question : Extension to PMUY

(a) whether the Pradhan Mantri Ujjawala Yojana(PMUY) scheme is applicable nationwide and
State-wise also and requires extensive dissemination, and propose for a fresh target to add 10
million more PMUY beneficiaries to the existing 80 million, if so, the details thereof and progress
made, State wise as on date and present status thereof;
(b) whether the Government is committed to create smoke free environment in rural areas and if
so, the number of Gas connections sanctioned and the number of beneficiaries under PMUY in
the State of Telangana for the last three years, year-wise and district-wise;
(c) whether the Scheme has reached its objectives particularly in tribal areas of Telangana and if
not, the reasons therefor; and
(d) the measures the Government is going to take to implement the scheme in tribal areas?

(a) to (d) In order to provide clean and environment friendly cooking fuel to poor households,
especially in rural areas, the Government had launched Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)
in May 2016 across the country including the tribal areas of Telangana. The primary objective of
the PMUY is to provide access to clean cooking fuel LPG to poor households thereby protecting
their health by reducing the serious health hazards associated with use of conventional cooking
fuel such as firewood, coal, cow dung etc. which causes severe indoor household air pollution.
Use of LPG as cooking fuel frees women from the drudgery of collecting firewood, reduces time
spent on cooking and prevents deforestation. The Government has achieved the target to
distribute 8 crore connections under the Scheme in September, 2019. District-wise details of LPG
connections released under PMUY in the Sate of Telangana during the last three years are given
at Annexure.
Further, Hon''ble Finance Minister, during her budget speech on 1st February, 2021, made an
announcement to provide 1 crore more LPG connections under PMUY in addition to 8 crore LPG
connections already released. The modalities for releasing 1 crore LPG connections under
PMUY have already been finalised and have been communicated to the Oil Marketing
Companies.
