Question : NATURAL GAS RESOURCES



(a) the details of the natural gas resources located in the country so far;

(b) the details of their potential and the extent to which the potential has been exploited;

(c) the manner in which natural gas is being used in the country;

(d) whether it is proposed to set up an agency to work out schemes for the gas resources; and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

(a & b): The balance recoverable reserves of natural gas in the country as on 1.4.1999 is approximately 1020.61 Billion Cubic Metre (BCM). Cummulative production of natural gas in the country as on 1.4.1999 is approximately 306.974 BCM.

(c): The natural gas is being supplied to Power, Fertilizer and Petro-chemical plants and also to industrial units located in various States of the country.

(d & e): The exploration/exploitation of natural gas resources of the country is being done by National Oil companies like Oil & Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (ONGC), Oil India Ltd. (OIL) and Gas Authority of India Ltd. (GAIL) and some Private and Joint Venture Companies.
