Question : CLIMATE CHANGE



(a) whether the Government has set up any Centers to monitor climate changes in the country including Tamil Nadu;

(b) if so, the details thereof alongwith its functions thereof, State-wise;

(c) the details of assistance provided by the Government for the same;

(d) whether the Government proposes to set up more such Centres in the country including Tamil Nadu;

(e) if so, the details thereof, State-wise; and

(f) if not, the reasons therefore?

(a)& (b) Yes,Sir.Climate parameters (temperature, rainfall etc.) are being regularly monitored for over 100 years by the all India network of observatories established by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) including Tamil Nadu.IMD has recently installed additional 125 Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) all over India out of which 11 are in Tamil Nadu.IMD has a plan to expand the network of observatories over the country further.

(c) The Government provides entire funds for establishment of these observatories in different states.

(d)& (e) Yes, Sir.There is a plan to expand the network of such observatories in the country including Tamilnadu. Implementation plan is underway to install about 550 Automatic Weather Stations and 1350 Automatic Raingauge stations in different states in next 2 years.
