Question : Population Growth

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:

(a) whether India is expected to overtake China as the world’s most populous country around 2027, as per World Population Prospects 2019 report;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the rate of population growth in the country;

(c) the details of States/UTs having fertility rate more than two and the manner in which the Government proposes to bring down population in these States/UTs; and

(d) whether the Government has conducted any study with regard to impact of awareness programme on population control, if so, the details thereof and its outcome thereon?

(a) & (b): As per ‘World Population Prospects 2019’ report, India is expected to overtake China as the world’s most populous country around 2027;

As per Census 2011, the country’s Decadal Growth Rate between 2001 and 2011 was 17.7%;

(c): Details of States/ UTs having Total Fertility Rate (TFR) more than 2 are placed at Annexure I.

The initiatives taken by the Government to bring down poulation in these States/ UTs are placed at Annexure II.

(d): The Government conducts periodic surveys viz. the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) and the Sample Registration System (SRS) to study the impact of various awareness programmes being conducted. The key findings of the surveys are as follows:
• The Total Fertility Rate (TFR) has declined from 2.9 in 2005 to 2.2 in 2017 (SRS)
• The Wanted Fertility Rate has declined from 1.9 in NFHS III to 1.8 in NFHS IV.
• The Crude Birth Rate (CBR) has declined from 23.8 to 20.2 from 2005 to 2017 (SRS)
• The Teenage Birth Rate has halved from 16% (NFHS III) to 8% (NFHS IV)
