Question : ARJUNA AWARD



(a) the criteria being followed for awarding `Arjuna Award` to sports persons;

(b) whether any PIL has been filed in Delhi High Court to the effect that some deserving sports legends are not considered for the Award;

(c) if so, the details thereof together with the reaction of the Government thereto;

(d) whether the Government are contemplating to set up a Sports Regulatory Commission to identify deserving sports persons for the consideration of Arjuna Award; and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

(a) The Scheme for Arjuna Awards provides that Arjuna Award can be given to such sports persons who have put up outstanding performance in the year of the Award and the preceding three years. Arjuna Awards are also given to sports persons for life time contribution to sports.

(b) Yes, Sir.

(c) A writ petition has been filed by `Fitness Health Trust` in the Hon`ble High Court of Delhi regarding Non-Framing of Rules for Arjuna Award, Anti Doping tests in Sports and Match Fixing. Since matter is sub-judiced, Government`s stand on issues raised in the Petition will be explained in reply to be filed in the Court.

(d) No. Sir. There is a high level Selection Committee for selecting the Arjuna Awardees which is presided by the Union Minister in the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports.

(e) Does not arise.
