MINISTER OF STATE(IC) FOR LABOUR AND EMPLOYMENT (SHRI BANDARU DATTATREYA)
(a) to (e): As per the survey carried out by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) in the year 2009-10, the total employment in both organised and unorganised sector in the country was of the order of 46.5 crore. Out of this, about 2.8 crore were in the organised sector and the balance 43.7 crore in the unorganized sector.
The unorganized workers suffer from cycles of excessive seasonality of employment, lack of formal employer-employee relationship and absence of social security protection.
In order to take care of social security and welfare of unorganised workers, two-pronged strategy i.e. legislative measures and implementation of welfare schemes and programmes has been followed. The Legislative measures include the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, Employees Compensation Act, 1923, the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961, the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, 1976, the Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act, 1970, the Inter-State Migrant Workmen (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 1979, the Building and Other Construction Workers (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 1996, etc.
