Question : REPAIRING AND MAINTENANCE OF ROADS



(a) whether the Union Government has formulated any policy for the maintenance of roads while converting them into 4/6 lanes;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the State Government of Rajasthan has submitted any proposal regarding declaration of new NHs in the State; and

(d) if so, the time by which the said proposal is likely to be approved by the Government?

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF ROAD TRANSPORT AND HIGHWAYS (SHRI JITIN PRASADA)

(a) and (b) The maintenance of existing stretches of National Highways (NHs), where 4/6 laning works are under implementation by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), is being carried out by the Contractor / Concessionaire as part of their obligations under contract / concession agreement.

(c) and (d) Expansion of NH network is a continuous process and declaration of new NH is taken up from time to time depending upon, requirement of connectivity, inter-se priority and availability of funds. Proposals for declaration of total length of about 5,193 km of State Roads as NHs have been received from the State Government of Rajasthan. However, about 1,545 km State Roads in the State of Rajasthan have been declared as new NHs during August, 2011 and February, 2012.
