STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) TO (c) OF LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 99 DUE FOR REPLY ON 05.03.2007 REGARDING PROTECTION OF ENDANGERED FLORA BY SHRI VIJOY KRISHNA

(a) to (c) There are 155 endangered species in the country. Similarly about 120 plant species are known to have already gone extinct in India. These endangered and extinct plant species are mostly distributed/ recorded in the hotspot areas of Western Ghats, Himalayas and Andaman-Nicobar Islands. Many of the endangered plants are feared to be on the verge of exitiction. However, the exact degree/extent of extinction threat faced by the critically endangered plants is not known.
