Question : INSTITUTES FOR SPACE RESEARCH

(a) the number of universities/institutes which are presently functioning in the country dealing with Space Technology, Space Applications and Space Science, State-wise;

(b) the total budgetary allocation made to those institutions during the last three years, year-wise;

(c) whether the Government has any proposal to set up more such institutions in the coming years;

(d) if so, the details thereof, State-wise;

(e) whether there is also a proposal to provide scholarships for students going abroad for studies in space related fields; and

(f) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor?

MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF PERSONNEL, PG & PENSIONS AND IN THE PRIME MINISTER’S OFFICE (DR. JITENDRA SINGH):

(a) Two Madam, namely
(i) the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, a deemed university located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, and
(ii) Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) located in Dehradun, Uttarakhand - under the Department of Space.
(b) The Department of Space has provided the budgetary support to these Institutes during the last three years as under:

 (e) & (f) The Department of Space and California Insitute of Technology (Caltech), USA have established an endowed fellowship in the memory of Dr. Satish Dhawan a distinguished alumnus of Caltech and former Chairman, ISRO and Secretary, DOS. This fund provides an opportunity to one meritorious student every year from the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), to pursue Post Graduate programme in Aerospace Engineering.
