Question : Length of Railway Track

(a) whether the Indian Railway network is the fourth largest in the world;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the total length of railway track in the country as on date;

(d) whether a large area is still deprived of railway tracks and if so, the estimated length of railway tracks required for the remaining part of the country; and

(e) the steps being taken by the Government in this regard?

(a) & (b) The comparative position of Indian Railway network with other railway networks in the world is not maintained.

(c) The total length of railway track in the country as on 31.03.2015 is 1,17,996 Kilometres.
(d) & (e) There is no yardstick to measure the adequacy of railway

network in an area. However, it is Indian Railways endeavour to

provide connectivity to as many places as possible within the

overall availability of resources.
