Question : Establishment of Museums

(a) whether the Government proposes to establish more museums in the country at district level and regional level with the support of Museum Grant Scheme and if so, the details thereof;

(b) whether the Government has received proposals from various State Governments regarding financial assistance for setting up of new museums and renovation of existing museums and if so, the details thereof along with the status of such proposals, State/UT-wise including Rajasthan and Gujarat;

(c) the details of the allocation made and expenditure incurred on the establishment, maintenance and upkeep of such museums during the last three years and the current year, State-wise;

(d) whether the Government is implementing a 14 point museum reform agenda published by UNESCO to improve the below par condition and infrastructure of museums; and

(e) if so, the details thereof along with the policy adopted in this regard?

(a) Ministry of Culture does not establish new museum on its own. However, it operates a Museum Grant Scheme under which financial assistance is provided to State Governments, Voluntary Bodies, Societies and Trusts etc. for setting up new museums and development of existing museums.

(b) The details of proposals received from various State Governments for setting up of new museums and renovation of existing museums during the last three years and current year alongwith status are at Annexure-I.

(c) The details of funds released for setting up of new museums and renovations of existing museums (State/UT-wise) are at Annexure-II. Ministry of Culture does not grant financial assistance for upkeep of museums.

(d) & (e) The Government has initiated 14 point agenda on museum reforms in 2009 in an effort to bring qualitative changes in museums in India to keep pace with the international developments in the field. The condition of the museums is upgraded/modernized periodically.
