(a) to (c) Central Government formulated the National Water Policy in 1987, which was subsequently reviewed and revised in the year 2002 and 2012. The main objective of the National Water Policy is to take cognizance of the existing situation in water sector, to propose a framework for creation of a system of laws and institutions and a plan of action with a unified national perspective in planning, management and use of water resources.
Water being a State subject, measures for conservation, management and distribution of water resources (which includes objectives of NWP) are undertaken by the State Governments. Central Government supplements the efforts of the State Governments through various schemes/programme as per principles indicated in the National Water Policy. The National Water Policy has been sent to all States/ UTs for appropriate action. As per the National Water Policy, State Water Policies were to be drafted/revised in accordance with this policy keeping in mind the basic concerns and principles as also a unified national perspective. As per available information, 15 States/UT have finalized and adopted their State Water Policies.
