Question : LICENSING FOR IMPORT OF SUGAR



(a) whether the Union Government have made licence compulsory for the import of sugar of all grades;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) if not, the reasons thereof and the grade of sugar which can be imported freely?

(a),(b)&(c): The import of sugar as classified under chapter 14 of ITC (HS) classification is free. However, the import contracts for sugar are to be compulsorily registered with Agricultural and Processed Food Products Exports Development Authority (APEDA). Further, free importability of sugar under EXIM policy is subject to compliance of all other applicable domestic laws.
