Question : WATER SHARING DISPUTES



(a) whether the Government proposes to set up an empowered group to look into specifics of various water sharing disputes;

(b) if so, by when this group is likely to be set up alongwith its powers and functions;

(c) the number of water disputes arising between States and how many are pending with the Government; and

(d) to what extent this group would be helpful in setling water disputes expeditiously?

(c) The details of the inter-state water sharing disputes referred to the Union Government under Inter-State Water Disputes Act 1956 are as follows:

The water disputes related to Ravi & Beas, Cauvery and Krishna have been referred to the Tribunals for adjudication in 1985, 1990 & 2004 respectively. In respect of Madei/Mandovi water dispute, the Ministry (WR) convened an inter-state meeting during December, 2002, during which it was decided that Government of Goa and Central Water Commission would make joint efforts to reconcile the discrepancies in the data and in yield figure.
