Question : INFECTIONS ACQUIRED BY GOVERNMENT HOSPITALS



(a) whether it has come to the notice of the Government a number of patients dying from infections acquired by the Central Government controlled hospitals including the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS);

(b) if so, the details thereof including the number of patients admitted and the number out of which died due to hospital infections reported during each of the last three years and the current year, hospitalwise; and

(c) the steps taken/being taken by the Government to make the Central Government controlled hospitals including AIIMS free from infections?

(a) to (c): In so far as three Central Government Hospitals namely Safdarjung Hospital, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and Lady Hardinge Medical College & associated Hospitals and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) are concerned, no death due to infections acquired in the Hospital has been reported. The details of steps taken to make the central government controlled hospitals including AIIMS from infections are given below:

i. There is a Hospital Infection Control Committee and Biomedical waste Committee which monitor the implementation of infection control practices on regular basis. There is a dedicated infection control team which is involved in regular surveillance of hospital acquired infection.
ii. Regular IEC activities by Infection control team are held for all the categories of Health Care Workers to cover all the sensitive areas like OTs, ICUs etc.
iii. Prescribed guidelines are followed for disposal of Hospital Biomedical Waste (BMW) as per BMW management and handling rule 1998.
iv. Antibiotic policy is in place in these hospitals which aims at appropriate use of antibiotics and prevention of spread of infections.
