Question : Abandoned Fish Farms

(a) whether the Government is aware that a large number of fish farms are abandoned in various States of the country including Maharashtra;

(b) if so, whether the Union Government has received any representation from the various State Governments in this regard, if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Union Government is considering to revive these abandoned fish farms particularly in Maharashtra;

(d) if so, the details thereof; and

(e) the steps taken by the Union Government to revive these fish farms and increase shrimp and fish production in the country?

(a) to (e): As informed by some of the State Governments, including Maharashtra, some of the fish farms have been abandoned in the country. However, no representation from State Governments has been received in this regard in the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries. For development of fisheries and increasing production of fish, including shrimp, in the country, assistance is provided to fish farmers, fishery cooperatives and Self Help Groups (SHG) etc. for activities like construction and renovation of fish ponds and tanks, purchase of one time inputs like seed and feed for aquaculture, establishment of fish seed hatcheries and training and skill development in various aquaculture activities under the schemes “Development of Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture”, “National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB)” and “ Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY)”.
