Question : Production of Onions

(a) the total quantity of onions produced in the country for the past three years and for the current year;

(b) whether the Government has any proposal to ban export of onions permanently since the demand is higher than supply in the country;

(c) whether the amendment to Essential Commodities Act, 1955 by imposing stock limit will affect onion producing farmers; and

(d) if so, the steps being taken by the Government to augment the income of the farmers who can stock their produce to get better price in future?

(a) The quantity of Onions produced in the country, during 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 (Third Advance Estimates) is as under: -

(b) According to Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA) and Department of Commerce, there has been no proposal for permanent ban on export of Onions.

(c) & (d) Does not arise, as at present no stock limit has been imposed on Onion under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.
