Question : Medical and Dental Colleges

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state :

(a) the number of Government and private medical and dental colleges along with the number of graduate and postgraduate seats therein, State/UT-wise;

(b) the number of medical and dental colleges set up during the Twelfth Five Year Plan period, State/UT-wise;

(c) whether the Government has identified the States/UTs deficient of medical and dental colleges in the country, and if so, the details thereof;

(d) the steps taken/proposed to be taken by the Government to scale up the availability of medical and dental colleges, particularly in deficient and hilly States along with the criteria and norms relaxed for the purpose; and

(e) whether the Government has received any proposals for setting up of medical and dental colleges from various States/UTs, if so, the details thereof and the action taken/proposed to be taken by the Government thereon during each of the last three years and the current year,

(a): Lists of medical colleges and dental colleges with number of graduate and postgraduate seats are annexed as Annexure A & B.

(b): List of Medical Colleges and Dental Colleges established during the academic sessions 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 & 2015-16 falling in under Twelfth Five Year Plan Period are Annexed at C.
(c ) & (d): The norms/criteria for establishing a medical college are prescribed by the Medical Council of India’s (MCI) regulations namely “Establishment Medical College Regulations, 1999”. This regulation provides for relaxed norms relating to land requirement, bed occupancy to facilitate the setting up medical college in North East and Hilly Areas. Government is also implementing a CSS, namely “Establishment of new Medical Colleges attached with District/Referral Hospitals”. Under the scheme 58 medical colleges are to be established in districts which do not have medical college.
