Question : Leakages of Poisonous Gas

(a)whether waste materials from atomic power plants are being managed properly;

(b)if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor;

(c)Whether there is any case of release/leakage of poisonous gas/radioactive from the atomic power plants in any part of the country during the last three years; and

(d)If so, the details thereof and the steps taken by the Government in this regard?

(a)Yes, Sir.

(b)Management of radioactive waste in Indian context includes all types of radioactive wastes generated from the entire nuclear fuel cycle and also from installations using radionuclides in medicine, industry and research. In the choice of processes and technologies adopted utmost emphasis is given to waste minimisation and volume reduction. The comprehensive radioactive waste management operations are carried out fulfilling all prescribed regulatory requirements to avoid any adverse effect on the worker, the public and the environment.
