Question : Higher Education Enrolment

(a) whether the Government has data regarding the ratio of people registering for higher education in the country and if so, the details thereof including the comparison of the country with respect to the other countries of the world in this regard; and
(b) the details of the institution/authority accountable in this regard to enrolment in higher education?

(a): Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education in the country is calculated as total enrolment in higher education as percentage of the population in the 18-23 years age group. For international GER comparison, eligible population is taken in 18-22 years age group. As per report of the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) for 2015-16, GER in higher education in the age group 18-23 years is 24.5%. Taking population in the age group 18-22 years, it is 28.42% for 2015-16. The comparative figures of GER for the age group18-22 years in India and selected countries for the year 2014 are as below:

(b): Ministry of Human Resource Development conducts all India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) to collect the data regarding enrolment amongst other items, in higher education in the country. Designated nodal officer from the individual institution is primarily responsible for providing data for the survey.
