(a) whether the Government is aware of any border dispute between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh;

(b) if so, the details of claims made by both the States;

(c) whether as a result of this border dispute, large number of tribal people have been displaced;

(d) if so, the details thereof and the efforts being made to rehabilitate them;and

(e) the details of action taken by the Government to settle the border dispute?

STATEMENT IN REPLY TO LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 2564 FOR 16.12.2008 REGARDING BORDER DISPUTE BETWEEN ASSAM AND ARUNACHAL PRADESH.

(a) to (e): Yes Sir,There is a border dispute between the States of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.In a suit filed by Government of Assam on this issue, the Supreme Court of India vide its judgment dated 25.9.2006 has appointed a Local Commission for identification of boundaries between the States of Assam-Nagaland and Assam-Arunachal Pradesh.Meeting of the Local Commission have been held at regular intervals.The Government of Arunachal Pradesh has submitted a proposal to the State of Assam.The State of Assam is yet to file its response on the proposal of Government of Arunachal Pradesh before the Commission.In the meeting held on 8th November,2008, the local Commission has directed the State of Assam to furnish its response on the proposal of Government of Arunachal Pradesh on or before 31st December,2008 to the Government of Arunachal Pradesh and Commission.

The State Governments of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have informed that no tribal people have been displaced due to border dispute.
