Question : Patient Safety Training

(a) whether a market survey conducted by National Skill Development Centre (NSDC) has found lack of adequate skills and knowledge among Allied Health Professionals about patient safety standards and protocol;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government has taken cognizance of the fact that according to WHO, 10 in 100 patients in developing countries contract healthcare associated infections every year and if so, the details thereof;

(d) whether the Government is taking adequate measures to ensure that patient safety training is imparted to Allied Health Professionals on an urgent basis; and

(e) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons thereof?

Answer given by the minister

(a) & (b) As per the study conducted by National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) on human resource and skill requirement for healthcare sector, there is a significant lack of structured standardization in quality of services and emphasis on safety in healthcare. The study has highlighted that there is dearth of adequate knowledge and skills on patient safety standards among the healthcare professionals.

(c) to (e) The Government is aware of healthcare associated infections related issues. The National Skill Development Corporation has been giving training in health care sector through its training partners. So far 1,20,452 persons have been imparted training in health care sector by NSDC. Moreover, the patient safety measures include infection control and biomedical waste management, auto disabled syringe, patient safety committees, safety norms of patient etc.
