Question : Expenditure on Demonetisation

(a) the expenditure incurred by the Government on implementing the scheme of demonetisation; and
(b) the number of cases of corruption registered during the implementation of the scheme?

(a) Cancellation of legal tender character of Specified banknotes necessitated augmented functioning of regular activities only, no separate expenditure head was created for the purpose and hence no statistics on expenditure is available.

(b) During the post demonetisation period, till 17.3.2017, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered 42 regular cases and 4 preliminary Enquiries relating to irregularities in currency conversion by banks and Postal Departments.

More than 1100 searches and surveys, in respect of suspicious high value cash deposits or related activities, led to seizure of cash of Rs. 513 crore by Income Tax Department. Through Operation Clean Money 18 lakh persons were identified whose cash transactions did not appear in line with their tax profile.
