(a) whether the delayed monsoon had led to 5-10 per cent drop in power
generation from hydro power projects;
(b) if so, the details thereof;
(c) the estimated shortfall in power generation in mega watts as a result of
the same;
(d) the steps being taken by the Government to meet such shortage so as
to ameliorate power crisis; and
(e) the details of the power projects likely to be affected due to shortage of
water in the country?

(a) to (c) : During the period April to 8th August, 2012, the overall hydel power
generation was 5.82% less than the target. The actual hydel generation was
higher in Northern and Western regions by 1.81% and 6.17% respectively as
compared to targets. However, actual hydel generation was less in Southern,
Eastern and North-Eastern regions by 27.88%, 11.11% & 18.91% respectively as
compared to targets.
(d) & (e) : The generation from hydro power station depends on the inflow
due to rainfall in the catchment area and snowmelt (Himalayan Rivers) and the
storage. Generation will be generally less if there is shortfall in rainfall in
catchment area. Any shortage in hydro generation could be compensated by
increasing generation from thermal power stations.
