Question : Shortage of Drinking Water

Will the Minister of URBAN DEVELOPMENT be pleased to state:

(a) whether various cities are facing shortage of drinking water and if so, the details thereof, city-wise;

(b) the details of water supply schemes in urban areas/cities in the country;

(c) the funds sanctioned and work undertaken under these schemes during the last three years and the current year so far, State and city-wise; and

(d) the other remedial measures taken/proposed to be taken to ensure the supply of water for drinking purpose and for toilets in urban areas/cities?

( a ): Yes, Madam.
Some towns/cities are facing shortage of drinking water. The day-to-day operations of water supply are looked after by the State Governments/Urban local bodies (ULBs) concerned.

(b to d): Water supply is a state subject. Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) supplements the efforts of State Governments/ Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in providing adequate water supply facilities in urban areas by providing financial assistance under the following schemes:
