Question : MILK PRODUCTION



(a) whether substantial gap exists betweeen demand and supply of milk and milk products in the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the milk production in the country has registered a rise during the last three years;

(d) if so, the details thereof alongwith the percentage increase in the production of milk during the said period, State-wise and year-wise;

(e) the number of public and private agencies engaged in the production of milk in the country, State-wise;

(f) the number of milk co-operatives and their share in the development of dairy sector in the country,State-wise; and

(g) the steps taken by the Government to encourage the milk co-operatives/dairy co-operatives for promotion of dairy sector and to meet the shortfall of milk?

(a) & (b) The milk production at national level is by and large sufficient to meet the domestic demand of miik and milk products. However during the lean season, shortage in liquid milk is met through reconstitution of milk powder/milk fat.

(c) & (d) There has been an increase of 7% in the milk production during the last three years from 108.6 million tonnes in 2008-09 to 116.2 million tonnes (estimated) in 2010-11. The State wise details of milk production and percentage increase is at Annexure-I.

(e) Information on the number of public and private agencies engaged in the production of milk is not available with the Department.

(f) The number of milk`co-operatives in the country during 2009-10 was about 1.40 iakh. Approximately 8% of the milk production is handled by the cooperative sector. The State wise detail of milk cooperatives is at Annexure-ll.

(g) The Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying & Fisheries is implementing dairy development schemes namely, Intensive Dairy Development Programme, Strengthening Infrastructure for Quality & Clean Milk Production, Assistance to Cooperatives, National Project for Cattle & Buffalo Breeding and Fodder & Feed development scheme to encourage milk cooperatives for promotion of dairy sector and to meet the shortfall of milk.
