Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF STATE (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) FOR CONSUMER AFFAIRS, FOOD & PUBLIC DISTRIBUTION (PROF. K.V. THOMAS)

(a) and (b): The Central Government has not received any complaint regarding under-weighing by sugar mills during procurement of sugarcane from the farmers in the current sugar season 2011-12. However, the Governments of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu have reported that there have been cases of such nature and after investigation, action is taken as per law.

(c) and (d): No such proposal is under consideration of the Government at present. Weighing of commodities including sugarcane is governed by the statutory provisions of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.
