Question : AGREEMENT WITH CHINA



(a) whether any accord has been signed between India and China to extend cooperation in the field of Science and Technology as reported in the Hindustan dated November 18, 2004.

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the areas in which our country is likely to support China alongwith the details thereof; and

(d) whether China has signed any pact to support India in the field of nuclear energy; and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

(a) to (e): A Statement is laid on the Table of the House.

STATEMENT AS REFERRED IN REPLY TO LOK SABHA’S STARRED QUESTION NO. 220 FOR 15-12-2004 RAISED BY SHRI NARENDRA KUMAR KUSHAWAHA AND PROF. MAHADEORAO SHIWANKAR REGARDING “AGREEMENT WITH CHINA”.

(a) & (b): No Sir. No agreement for cooperation in science and technology was signed during the recent visit of Chinese State Councillor to India during November 14-18, 2004.

(c) During a meeting between the Chinese State Councillor and Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Science & Technology and Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Department of Ocean Development, it was proposed to set up a Joint Steering Committee to strengthen cooperation in diverse areas such as Disaster Management, Information Technology, Pharmaceuticals including Indian System of Medicines, Non-Conventional Energy etc.

(d) & (e) During the visit, no pact was signed to support India in the field of Nuclear Energy.
