Question : Trade in Generic Pharmaceuticals


Will the Minister of CHEMICALS AND FERTILIZERS be pleased to state:

(a) the details of India''s share in the global trade of generic pharmaceuticals;
(b) the total quantity and value of production of generic pharmaceuticals along with the quantity and value of such products exported and imported during the last three years and the current year, category-wise;
(c) the share of generic and non-generic medicines to the total sales of medicines in the country including the Government hospitals; and
(d) the steps taken by the Government to promote use of generic medicines including compulsory prescription of generic medicines by doctors and the outcome of such steps, if any?

(a) to (d): A statement is laid on the Table of the House.

Statement referred to reply to LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION No. 134 TO BE ANSWERED ON THE 26th July, 2016 regarding Trade in Generic Pharmaceuticals (14th Position)

(a): For the year 2015, India’s share of global trade of generics was about 8.8% on account of 25.6 billion USD of Indian generic market in the global generic market of 290 billion USD.

(b): Information about the total quantity and value of production of generics is not available. India’s total exports & imports of drugs and pharmaceuticals, which primarily includes generics in terms of quantity and value for last 3 year and current year is as under:-

(c): No exact information about the percentage share of non-generic medicine is available. However, as per the estimates by India Brand Equity Fund (IBEF), 9% of the domestic market was on account of non-generic drugs.

(d): The para 1.5 of the Indian Medical Council (Professional conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002 provides that “Every physician should, as far as possible, prescribe drugs with generic names and he/she shall ensure that there is a rational prescription and use of drugs”.

Besides, to promote consumption of generic medicines, a countrywide campaign for ensuring availability of generic medicines at affordable prices to all, in the name of “Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Yojana (PMJAY)”, has been launched by the Department of Pharmaceuticals and these generic drugs are available at “Jan Aushadhi Stores” run by Bureau of Pharmaceuticals of PSUs of India (BPPI) under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Yojana.
