The Planning Commission estimates poverty at national and state level from the
large sample surveys on household consumer expenditure conducted by the
National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO) at an interval of approximately five
years. These surveys have been conducted during 1973-74, 1977-78, 1983,
1987-88, 1993-94 and 1999-2000. The estimates of number of poor for the years
1987-88, 1993-94 and 1999-2000 are given below.
