Question : TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAMME



(a) whether the Government would consider to start a new teachers’ training programme in the name of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan to motivate teachers;

(b) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor;

(c) the number of days allotted for training of elementary school teachers under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan; and

(d) the steps being taken to address the growth of low-quality teacher training institutes in the private sector?

(a) to (b): The Government of India is already imp- lementing the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Teacher Education which provides financial assistance for teacher education development to States / Union Territories.

Government has also launched a scheme named as Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT), which provides an integrated platform for building synergies among all the existing initiatives for Teacher/Faculty development programmes and schemes.

(c): Under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA), there is a provision for regular annual in-service training for teachers up to 20 days, 30 days induction training for newly recruited teachers and 60 days training for untrained teachers.

(d): The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) is a statutory body responsible for maintaining stan- dards in Teacher Education in the country. The NCTE has recently revised its Regulations and Norms and Standards for Teacher Education Institutions(TEIs) and Programs to ensure that good quality institutions come up in the teacher education sector.
