Question : Decline in Supply of Coal by SCCL

(a) whether the coal production by Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) during April-September period declined by 3.4 per cent to 22.2 MT compared to 23 MT in the corresponding period of last fiscal and if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor;
(b) whether the Government proposes to restore the output as the demand has already picked up by now and if so, the details thereof;
(c) whether the Coal India Limited (CIL) which accounts for over 80 per cent of the domestic coal production is eyeing 598 MT production in 2016-17 and if so, the details thereof; and
(d) whether the CIL has set a target to produce one billion tonnes of fossil fuel by 2020 and if so, the details thereof?

(a). Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) (jointly owned by the Government of Telangana and the Government of India on a 51:49 equity) produced 26.18 Million Tonne (MT) of coal during the period April, 2016 to September, 2016 (in 2016-17) compared to 27.20 MT during the same period in 2015-16. Heavy rainfall in the coal belt areas was the main reason that affected performance of opencast mines.
(b). Coal production of SCCL in 2016-17 (as on 23.03.2017) is 59.43 MT compared to 58.82 MT during the corresponding period in 2015-16.
(c). The Annual Plan target for Coal India Limited (CIL) for the year 2016-17 is to produce 598.61 MT. In 2016-17 (up to February, 2017), CIL has produced 488.06 MT coal with 2.3 % growth over the last year.
(d). An exercise has been carried out to prepare a road map for achieving a production level of 1 Billion Tonne coal by the year 2019-20. So far, mines/projects to produce about 908.10 MT in 2019-20 have been identified.
