Question : Losses Suffered by Airports

(a) whether a large number of airports in the country have suffered losses during each of the last three years;

(b) if so, the details thereof, airportwise and the reasons therefor;

(c) whether the Government has conducted any study in this regard;

(d) if so, the details and the outcome thereof and if not, the reasons therefor;

(e) whether the Government has provided financial assistance to such airports to bring them out of such losses during the said period;

(f) if so, the details thereof, airportwise and if not, the reasons therefor; and

(g) the other steps taken/being taken by the Government to make such airports viable and profitable?

(a) & (b) : Yes, Madam. The details of loss incurred by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) airports and other Joint Venture airports are at Annexure-I and Annexure-II respectively. The losses are mainly due to low revenue generation to meet the total expenditure of the respective airports. ;

(c) to (f) : No, Madam. AAI is a profit making organization as a whole and consistently paying dividend to the Government.;

(g) : AAI has initiated several remedial measures to make the loss making airports viable and profitable by developing cargo activities, enhancement of non-aeronautical revenue by award of contracts through master concessions, allowing operation of flying schools at non-operational airports, encouraging Maintenance, Repair & Overhauling (MRO) activities
