Question : PROMOTION OF FISHERIES



(a) whether the Union Government has received any proposal from various State Governments for promotion of fisheries and imparting fisheries training to progressive fishermen outside their respective States;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) the time by which the said proposal is likely to be implemented?

(a) &(b) The Central Government receives proposals from several State Governments seeking assistance under the Centrally Sponsored/ Central Sector Schemes, for promotion of fisheries and for imparting training to fishermen. These schemes are: a) Development of Inland Fisheries & Aquaculture b) National Scheme for Welfare of fishermen c) Development of Marine Fisheries Infrastructure & Post Harvest operation, and d) Strengthening of Database and Geographical Information system for the Fishery Sector. Besides, National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) provides assistance for various fishery development activities & training of fishermen.

Under the “Training & Extension” component of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme “National Scheme for Welfare of Fishermen”, assistance is provided to State Governments for training of fishermen, establishment of Fish Farmers Training & Awareness Centre, organization of workshops/ seminars etc. NFDB also provides assistance for training of fishermen under its Human Resources Development programme. The training is provided on different aquaculture practices, processing of fish & extension activities to the farmers.

(c) These schemes are demand driven and the funds are released to the State Governments on proposals which are in accordance with the guidelines of these schemes and depending upon availability of funds.
