Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE(SHRI SHRIPAD Y. NAIK)

(a) The estimates of profits earned in spices industry is not available. However, the estimated value of the spices production in the country based on current prices and value of exports of spices and spice products for three years are given below :-

 (Rupees in crores)
Year Value of Production Value of exports
1997-98 11922.94 1408.31 1998-99 15065.34 1758.02 1999-2000 17059.02 1861.03

(b) The increase in value of export and value of production of spices has been more than increase in value of imports of spices. However, recently decline in prices of some spices has been reported.

(c) & (d) The Anjarakandy cinnamon estate is in private sector. Government has, therefore, no direct role in development and upkeep of the plantations in this estate.

(e) Spices Board is implementing a number of programmes to promote export of spices with focus on improving quality of spices and value addition. The Board also supports the exporters with adequate data on international market, prices, quality, competitiveness, etc. and help exporters to introduce their products in overseas markets.
