Question : SAHAYAKS IN ARMY



(a) whether a large number of soldiers are working as ‘Sahayaks’ in the army;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the estimated burden on the central exchequer;

(c) whether the Government is considering to discontinue the system of ‘Sahayaks’; and

(d) if so, the details thereof?

MINISTER OF THE STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE (SHRI A.K. ANTONY)

(a) & (b): Sahayaks are authorized to officers and JCOs in the Army as per their entitlement, while serving with formations functioning on war establishment. These Sahayaks are actually combatant soldiers who are entitled to regular pay, allowances and other benefits befitting to their rank in their hierarchy.

(c) & (d): As per the recommendations of the Standing Committee on Defence, the system of Sahayaks in the Army has been taken up for review.
