Question : CRIMES IN MUMBAI LOCAL



(a) whether the criminal activities in the Mumbai local trains are on the rise;

(b) if so, the number of such cases brought to light during the last one year, till date; and

(c) the steps taken by the Railways to prevent such activities?

(a) and (b): There is no rise in the number of cases of criminal activities reported in Mumbai Local trains. The number of such cases reported during the year 2009 and current year 2010 (Upto November) is as under:

(c): Prevention of crime, registration of cases, their investigation and maintenance of law and order in Railway premises as well as on running trains are the statutory responsibility of the State Police, which they discharge through Government Railway Police (GRP) of the State concerned. As such the cases of crime on Railways are reported to, registered and investigated by the Govt. Railway Police.

Following steps are being taken to prevent such activities:

(i) Criminal activities in the Mumbai Local trains are prevented with the joint efforts of GRP and RPF.

(ii) Close liaison is being maintained with GRP and City Police to nab the culprits.

(iii) GRP/RPF staff are deployed at stations and surprise checks are being conducted. Intelligence regarding active criminals is being collected from City Police Intelligence Branch.

(iv) Armed escort of GRP is deputed in ladies coaches of suburban local trains during night hours.

(v) Officers and men of GRP and RPF are sensitized about changing modus operandi of the offenders.
