THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR JAL SHAKTI & SOCIAL JUSTICE AND EMPOWERMENT

(SHRI RATTAN LAL KATARIA)

(a) & (b) Cleaning of river is a continuous process and Government of India is supplementing the efforts of the State/Union Territory (UT) Governments in addressing the challenges of pollution of rivers by providing financial and technical assistance under National River Conservation Plan (NRCP). Under the NRCP (except river Ganga and its tributaries), project proposals are received from the State/UT Governments from time to time for taking up pollution abatement works in towns along various rivers, and are considered for financial assistance on a cost sharing basis subject to their conformity with the scheme guidelines, pollution status of the rivers, prioritizations, outcome of appraisal by independent institutions and availability of Plan funds. NRCP has so far covered polluted stretches of 34 rivers in 77 towns spread over 16 States/UTs in the country with a sanctioned cost of Rs.5965.90 crore and sewage treatment capacity of 2522.03 million litres per day (mld) has been created. State/UT-wise details of rivers covered under National River Conservation Plan are given at Annexure.
(c) In the State of Rajasthan, various pollution abatement works have been sanctioned for Kota town at a cost of Rs.258.48 crore on cost sharing basis between Government of India and Government of Rajasthan for conservation of river Chambal under the Namami Gange programme. A Central Grant of Rs.68.71 crore has been released to the State Government and expenditure of Rs.62.79 crore has been incurred so far on the project.
