Question : SPECIAL TRAINS DURING FESTIVAL SEASON



(a) whether the Railways introduce special trains to cater to the extra rush of passengers during the major festival seasons in the country;

(b) if so, the details of trains introduced for the purpose during the current year;

(c) the details of trains cancelled out of these without making any alternative arrangements along with the reasons therefor;

(d) the number of accidents, casualties and persons injured during the festival season at stations and trains this year along with the compensation paid to the victims; and

(e) the other steps taken/being taken by the Railways to introduce sufficient number of trains in proportion to the extra rush of passengers during such seasons?

KARUNAKARAN TO BE ANSWERED IN LOK SABHA ON 27.11.2014 REGARDING SPECIAL TRAINS DURING FESTIVAL SEASON.

(a) Yes, Madam.

(b) The zone-wise details of total number of special trains run from April 2014 to September 2014 is as under:-

(c) Out of the above, no special train was cancelled during the above period.

(d) There was only one incident during festival season 2014, in which one person died and one was injured while trying to board a running train.
During the current year, in the festival season that is from 1st October to 15th November 2014 altogether 06 consequential train accidents took place at stations and no loss of life or injury was involved therein.

Payment of compensation to the victims of train accident (as defined under Section 124 of the Railway Act,1989) is decided by the Railway Claims Tribunal after a claim is filed with the Tribunal by the Claimant. The compensation is paid by the Railways only after award of a decree by the Tribunal in favour of the claimant and if the decree so awarded by the Tribunal is decided to be satisfied by the Railways. The amount of compensation paid to victims of train accident in 2014-15 (upto 20.11.2014) is Rs. 73.49 Lakhs.

(e) Indian Railways run special trains during peak seasons, festivals, special events for clearance of extra rush of passengers keeping in view the pattern of traffic, operational feasibility and availability of resources. This is an ongoing process on Indian Railways.
