Question : ADULTERATION IN FOOD AND DRUGS



(a) the number of cases of spurious drugs and adulteration of food-items noticed during the last three years, State-wise;

(b) the action taken/proposed to be taken by the Government in this regard;

(c) whether the Government have any plan to set up a permanent machinery to curb this menace;

(d) if so, the details thereof;

(e) if not, the reasons therefore;

(f) whether the Government have conducted any study on the impact of this menace on the National Health; and

(g) if so, the details thereof?

(a) State-wise information provided by State authorities regarding spurious drugs and adulteration in food items for the last 3 years is given at Annexure-I & II.

(b) to (e) The enforcement of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 as well as the PFA Act, 1954 are vested with the state authorities who conduct regular inspectios,draw random samples etc. for checking the quality of the food and drugs sold in the market. In the case of spurious drugs, raids are also conducted of drug manufacturing and sale units, to curb this problem. Punitive action is taken against offenders under the law.

In the matter of spurious drugs, the DCG(I) also convened a meeting of the State Drug Controllers of the Northern Region and the representatives of the Pharma industry and trade associations to explore possibilities of curbing this activity; and State Governments and associations were advised to implement a Number of measures to check the menace of spurious and adulterated drugs. Financial assistance is also being provided to the State Governments to augment testing facilities and develop an information system to maintain a suitable data base for purposes of monitoring.

(f) & (g) No specific study has been conducted regarding the impact of these malpractises on national health.
