(a) & (b) The present estimate of utilizable irrigation
potential from ground water in the country is 64
million hectare. The State-wise details of utilizable
irrigation potential, utilization during various Plans
and their percentage till the end of IX Plan, are given
in the enclosed Statement-I.
(c) Plan-wise/State-wise number of pump-sets
installed with area of irrigation is not available.
However, on the basis of the census of Minor Irrigation
Projects, the information regarding number of pump-sets
for the years 1986-87 and 1993-94 is given in enclosed
Statement-II.
(d) Water being a State subject, the
responsibility of planning, funding, execution and
implementation of various projects including ground
water development primarily lies with the concerned
State Government. The Central assistance is provided
in the form of Block Loan and Block Grant in the State
Plan and is not tied to any project/programme except
the amount earmarked under “Special Problemsâ€
criterion. Details of X Plan target for creation of
irrigation potential in the States through ground water
are given in the enclosed Statement-III.
