Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF LABOUR (SHRI SAHIB SINGH VERMA)

(a): As per the labour force survey conducted by NSSO during 1999-2000, estimated growth rate of employment in the construction sector was of the order of 7.09% during 1993-94 to 1999-2000.

(b) to (d): Since construction sector is highly labour intensive, mobile, seasonal, intermittent and inter-connected, it is considered to be an unorganised sector. As such, out of the total work force of around 1.76 crore in construction sector around 1.65 crore are in unorganised sector. During the Tenth Five Year Plan, training and skill development has been identified as one of the priority areas. In order to develop the skill of the construction workers, Skill training is provided by various organisations like Construction Industry Development Centre (CIDC) for construction workers besides Central and State Government as per their capacity.
