THE MINISTER OF HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT (DR. MURLI MANOHAR JOSHI)
(a) to (e): As per the information provided by the All India
Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the number of institutes
approved by them imparting IT/ IT related courses, state-wise, is
given in Annexure. Other micro-details are available in the website
of AICTE â www.aicte.org. Approval of AICTE is required for
technical institutes at degree and diploma level, which is
considered on the basis of duly prescribed regulations and also
keeping in view the financial viability, availability of
infrastructural facilities like building, class-rooms, faculty,
etc. as per the prescribed norms & standards. It came to the
notice of AICTE that some courses in IT were being run by certain
Universities without prior approval of AICTE. AICTE took up the
matter with the Universities and as well as with the University
Grants Commission (UGC) for necessary corrective steps. Both the
AICTE and the UGC have set up Cells for prevention of malpractices
to curb such violations. In addition, UGC has requested the
concerned State Governments to conduct inquiries regarding the
existence / functioning of such unapproved universities. Indian
Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc)
Bangalore, Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT)
Allahabad, and Indian Institute of Information Technology &
Management (IITM) Gwalior are the centrally funded technical
institutes which are centres of excellence imparting courses in IT,
computer science and related subjects.
