Question : ALLOCATION OF FOODGRAINS TO TAMIL NADU



(a) whether the Government have received any request from the Tamil Nadu Government for the allocation of more sugar, paddy, wheat etc;

(b) if so, the details thereof; and

(c) the action taken in this regard?

(a), (b) & (c) : Sugar :

The Government of Tamil Nadu requested in November-December,1999, for increasing their monthly levy sugar allocation from 23,741 tonnes to 31,000 tonnes to meet the requirement for distribution of sugar to all family card holders numbering about 156 lakhs @ 500 gm per capita per month, subject to a maximum of 2 kg per card as against the norm of 425 gm per capita per month adopted by Government of India. The request of the State Government could not be acceded to on account of less availability of levy sugar.

Paddy and wheat :
Rice is allotted to the States for Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) from Central Pool. A request received from the Government of Tamil Nadu for enhancement of monthly rice allocation to the tune of 56,000 tonnes was accepted and the State was given a further additional allocation of 56,000 tonnes of rice per month from July, 1999 to April, 2000.
No request has been received from Government of Tamil Nadu for allocation of more wheat.
